Sustainability For Beginners. 3 Major Things You Can Do.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

As a creative hub taking responsibility to reduce our environmental impact, we’ve realised that sustainability isn’t just about the environment, it’s a philosophy that can also help us live a more fulfilling and compassionate life. In this article, we hope to share some of the ways we are practising sustainability, and hopefully provide some inspiration for you as a beginner, to incorporate these practices in your daily creative activities.

Thou Shalt Not Forget The Meaning of Sustainability

As a newbie, you may be unsure what sustainability means. To put it in the simplest terms “sustainability” refers to a lifestyle in which present actions do not have a detrimental impact on society’s future life quality. Consider sustainable fashion, sustainable light, and other approaches to preserving natural resources for future generations.

Re-evaluate

By Joadre

Reconsidering how our consumer habits influence the environment is one of the most essential approaches for achieving sustainability. Before you buy something, think about how you’ll use it. Will you make use of it more than once? The 2021 Fashion Resale Market and Trend Report, reports that 208M lbs. of waste were generated by single-use outfits in 2019. Will you trash it after one use? Is it absolutely required to buy it? If it is, then choose biodegradable versus plastic items, such as those manufactured from sustainable bamboo.

Tone Down towards Sustainability

About 15% of fabric meant for clothes ends up in the cutting room. For decades, the industry has tolerated this waste rate. Simply said, reducing waste is the most effective approach to live a sustainable life. Tone down fabric wastage, substitute plastic storage bags and containers with reusable silicone and rattans; instead of buying sachet/plastic water, get a water bottle and refill it yourself.

Reutilize/Recycle

The fashion industry provides an excellent platform for creatives to express themselves. You could give a new dream, a new personality, and desired aesthetics with each new collection. Consider repurposing existing archival stock while also focusing on experimenting with unconventional materials to produce something fresh. You can start by repurposing and recycling offcuts and leftovers from other factories or enterprises. Consider how products may be utilised for reasons other than those for which they were designed.
