Monica Kemirembe’s love for textiles is expressed in African Bags

Monica Kemirembe

Monica Kemirembe, is a Ugandan artist behind  Mwiza Kreationz. Her artistic  story is  woven with dedication and a love for textiles.

Kemirembe’s artistic inclination manifested early  in primary school during the 1990s, where she began crafting small items like bags and bracelets for her friends. Her  natural talent was nurtured in secondary school, where she unsurprisingly chose to take on fine art as her specialty. She scored highly in art in junior high school hence  Opting  for a combination that included art at Advanced -Level. Monica highly excelled in Art  in which she scored only Distinctions. 

This academic excellence earned Kemirembe a Uganda government scholarship to Kyambogo University, where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Industrial art and Design. Here, she honed her skills further, specializing in weaving and fabric decoration. 

Her exceptional talent continued to blossom, placing her among the top students and securing her a coveted spot for a Master’s degree in Art and Design, majoring in textiles. Completing her Master’s degree in December 2023 marked a significant milestone in her artistic journey.

Driven by her unwavering love for art, Monica Kemirembe hasn’t stopped at academic achievements,  she is passionate about artistic expressions which led her to establish Mwiza Kreationz, an art company that embodies her vision of creating and crafting wearable art and crafts. This venture serves as a platform for Kemirembe’s creativity and a resource for others seeking to explore the world of art and craft.

Her business is rooted in culture and Heritage hence the name MWIZA which in Bantu languages means Beautiful. 

When asked about her latest collection, Monica is proud of her newest  signature BAG “Branded Pearl of Africa Bags,”. These bags are more than just souvenirs but  they are cultural ambassadors, carrying a piece of Uganda’s rich heritage with every stitch. 

Creativity remains at the forefront of everything she does, a guiding principle that promises to propel her and her company even further. She  envisions her bag collection to one day becoming the most sought after souvenir sparking conversations about Ugandan Art and culture amongst the buyers globally. 

Monica believes in artistic collaborations and thats why she collaborates with other artisans in the Waka Creatives group,a platform for budding artisans to showcase their talents and gain recognition. 

Monica Kemirembe currently employs two young people, providing them with not just jobs but also opportunities to develop their artistic skills and improve their livelihoods. She is committed  to youth empowerment and believes that Art has power to transform communities.  Through her creations, Monica aspires to connect people and cultures.
