Inside 2019’s Ghana Women of the Year Awards

The need to encourage women to be actively involved in various fields of endeavor has become a dynamic concept in Ghana. Amazingly, this effort is bringing about a special awards ceremony to honor women who inspire and advocate for the empowerment of other women. The creators of the Ghana Women of the Year Honours have based the awards on one simple premise; when women support women, amazing things happen.

The Ghana Women of the Year Honours cover various aspects of life including fashion, lifestyle, media, entertainment, corporate and governance. Basically, the idea is to challenge women to reach for greatness. The discussion revolves around women receiving exciting opportunities, their ability to deliver, and thereby prove themselves, not because of gender equality but because they deserve it.

This year’s edition of Ghana Women of the Year Honours began with a stunning breakfast meeting for female CEO’s and business executives at the luxury Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra. The gathering brought together female entrepreneurs and business executives to network and build relationships on the theme “Facilitating Gender Parity in Corporate Ghana.”

The mentorship seminar “SHE Summit” followed the next day, with the theme “Beyond Gender.”  This was made of seasoned and successful women such as Ms. Dentaa Amoateng, Founder of GUBA enterprise, Lawyer Sandra Ankobia, Media personality AJ Sarpong and more, who served as speakers and panelists for a larger audience.

The 4th edition of the glamorous main gala finally came through at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra. It was an amazing night to remember. The event was meant to honor and “connect young and ambitious women with personalities who have challenged the status quo, broken barriers and accomplished awesome things in their various fields of endeavor” and it did just that.  Hosted by Ghanaian entrepreneur and TV/Radio presenter, Anita Erskine, the special awards night celebrated women who unreservedly use their expertise, position, and influence to inspire others to make a difference in moving other women forward.  It was pretty exciting to witness. The honorees were selected by an astute board of achievers who used clear and objective criteria to ensure that the final list was comprised of the most deserving women in each field.

In all 9 categories, different women were honored for their outstanding contributions. The honorees include Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong (Governance), Nana Ama Anamoah (Excellence in Media), Emma Morrisson (Corporate personality), Barbara Baeta (Excellence in Business), Delese Mimi Darko (Excellence in Health), Theresa Ayoade (Excellence in Entertainment Business), Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmann (Excellence in Education), Honorable Gloria Akufo (Governance), and Dr. Rosina Acheampong (Lifetime Achievement Award). Upon receiving the lifetime achievement award, Dr. Rosina said with joy in her heart: “I thank God for the energy to be able to stand here and receive this award. I dedicate it to the girl child, to live with dignity.”  She encouraged the classy ladies to rally together and support the vulnerable.
