Simplest Way To Figure Out Your Skin Type

Finally decided to hop on taking care of your skin? It’s been a long time coming but don’t worry, I don’t judge. The first thing to do before you start a skincare routine is to figure out your skin type. This will help you select the most appropriate skin care regimen for you.

The main skin types are dry, oily, normal, combination, sensitive and acne-prone. Wondering how to determine which of these categories you belong to? I’ve got you.

How to Figure Out Your Skin Type

There are different methods of determining your skin type. Check out some of the simplest ones:

  1. Wash your face and dab your T-zone with a tissue. If you can find oil on the tissue, then you have oily or combination skin.
  2. Pay attention to how your skin feels after cleansing. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, then you have dry skin. If other regions apart from your T-zone feel tight, then move to the combination skin queue, please.

However, sensitive skin is susceptible to reactions such as rash, redness and itching after using certain cleansers. If none of these after-cleansing effects apply to you, then you have normal skin and only require basic maintenance. As an oily/acne-prone girlie, I’m so jealous. But congratulations!

    1. Another simple way to figure out your skin type is to just look in the mirror. If your face has red and flaky patches, then you have sensitive or dry skin. If your face looks shiny all over, then you have oily skin. An oily T-zone and dry cheeks and chin mean you have combination skin. 2. You can figure out your skin type by simply applying a light pinch to your skin. If your skin wrinkles more than normal, then you have dry skin. If it looks normal, then you have oily skin.
    3. Your pore size is also a simple but sure way to determine your skin type. Normal skin has visible pores that are not large in size. Oily skin has large pores. Take some steps back from the mirror; if you can still see your pores, then you have oily skin. If you can’t find any pores on your skin, then you have dry skin.

How to Properly Care for Each Skin Type

Now that you’ve figured out your skin type, it is important to know how to take care of the skin concerns that are peculiar to you. No two skin types require the same kind of treatment. • Stay away from hot showers if you have dry skin. They only dry out your skin more.
        • No matter your skin type, ensure you moisturise. However, be particular about the moisturiser that works best for you. People with dry skin should go with moisturisers that have a thick consistency, while oily skin benefits better from lightweight moisturisers. What if I travel, how do I take care of my skin? • Cleanse morning and night if you have oily/acne-prone skin. Your skin will benefit from products that contain salicylic acid.
        • If you have sensitive skin, stick to soap and fragrance-free products. They will reduce your risk of skin flare-ups and irritation.
        • Every skin type needs sunscreen!
        • Lastly, stay hydrated. Your skin will thank you for it.

        Wrap Up

While it is easy to jump on every trending skin care product, you just might be harming your skin. Not every skin product is for you. Figure out your skin type and only use products that tackle your skin concerns. Good luck, and I hope your skin is always cared for!
