Angella Kakobyo is a visual artist and founder of Manzuru group specializing in string art, a unique craft that combines precision, creativity, and intricate design. Her journey with string art began in 2017, and over the years, she has perfected the art of transforming simple materials like thread and nails into vibrant, detailed pieces. Angella’s work ranges from gradients to large human figures and algorithmic designs.A self-taught string artist, Angella transforms simple materials like thread and nails into intricate and vibrant works of art, ranging from delicate gradients to large-scale human figures and complex algorithmic designs.
Angella’s passion for creativity was nurtured from a young age. Inspired by crafting sessions organized by Compassion Uganda at St. Kakumba Chapel, she and her siblings, each with their own artistic talents in painting, animation, and weaving, would create artworks from basic materials. These early experiences instilled in her a lifelong love for art and a deep belief in its ability to inspire and transform individuals and communities.
While her artistic inclinations were evident from childhood and despite excelling in art throughout high school, she didn’t pursue it at the university level. Admitted to Makerere University for art, she opted for Statistics at Kyambogo University, a decision driven by financial considerations and the fact that two of her siblings were already pursuing art-related degrees. However, her passion for string art remained, practiced on a smaller scale alongside her studies.
After exploring various employment opportunities and finding herself unfulfilled, Angella made a pivotal decision in 2019: to dedicate herself to her art full-time. This leap of faith, driven by a deep desire for creative expression and a belief in her potential, marked the beginning of her professional art career. The COVID19 lockdown proved to be a turning point. Losing her job and facing the frustrations of the job market, Angella Kakobyo turned to her art, creating a piece that resonated deeply with her online audience. The overwhelming demand that followed solidified her decision to pursue string art as a full-time career.
Since then, Angella has tirelessly pushed the boundaries of string art and developing a unique style that sets her apart. She’s constantly challenging herself, exploring new techniques, and striving to stand out in the growing community of string artists. Her dedication and perseverance have transformed her from a self-taught artist into a confident and accomplished professional, proving that passion and hard work can overcome any obstacle.
One of Angella’s most recent works, a 3D human portrait titled “The Traveller,” showcases her ingenuity and artistic vision. Created using plastic key cards as a frame, this piece embodies her resourcefulness and her ability to transform everyday materials into something extraordinary. The portrait, completed in just ten hours, is a confirmation of how skilled she is and her ability to bring complex artistic visions to life.
While Angella hasn’t yet collaborated with other artists formally, she’s actively building connections within the art community. She’s currently mobilising and leading a group of string artists in Uganda, fostering a supportive network where artists can share ideas, offer assistance, and collaborate on projects. She recognizes the value of collaboration in expanding her artistic horizons and reaching a wider audience.
Angella has a strong desire to create art that is both beautiful and eco-conscious hence her committment to sustainable practices, incorporating recycled materials like plastic waste and paper into her backgrounds. She transforms these discarded materials into textured canvases that add a unique and surreal quality to her string art.
Beyond her personal art practice, Angella is passionate about giving back to her community. She’s worked with organizations like Tuzuule Art Project, Azulato Children’s Festival, and 7hills International School, sharing her skills and inspiring creativity in children. She recognizes the importance of art education and its potential to empower young people.
Angella is excited about the future of art and fashion in Uganda. She sees a growing community of young and creative individuals and believes that the combination of human creativity and the power of AI will lead to exciting new artistic expressions. She hopes to see more Ugandans appreciating and consuming locally produced art, breaking down stereotypes and fostering a stronger sense of national pride in Ugandan artistry. She’s determined to contribute to this movement, creating art that inspires, empowers, and transforms.
