Joshua Wababu transforms “rags” into high-fashion pieces.

Joshua Wababu is a Ugandan fashion designer with a clear mission to inspire the next generation of fashionistas.  He began his  fashion career in 2019 with a desire to create unique designs that not only stand out but also contribute to putting Uganda’s fashion industry on the global map.

He’s actively involved in the Ugandan fashion industry and has participated in prominent events like the Upendo and Northern Uganda Fashion Week, absorbing inspiration and connecting with fellow creatives and fashion designers. These experiences have fueled his passion and solidified his commitment to creating something truly unique.

In a world saturated with trends, Wababu seeks to craft his own path, creating pieces that reflect his individual artistic vision.  Regardless of the fashion trend, Wababu seeks to create clothing that is eco friendly and minimises fast fashion.

One of Wababu’s recent collections, aptly named “Rags,” demonstrates his resourcefulness and innovative approach.  This collection explores the potential of worn-out clothing, giving new life to discarded materials.  He sees value where others see waste, transforming “rags” into high-fashion pieces.  This collection was specifically designed with the film industry in mind, showcasing Wababu’s versatility and his ability to tailor his designs to specific needs.  “Rags” is an indication of his creativity and  commitment to sustainable practices, proving that even discarded materials can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful.

Wababu’s experience collaborating with others especially during fashion shows has been invaluable  He’s gained new insights, explored different perspectives, and discovered innovative techniques in designing. .  These collaborations have not only broadened his creative horizons but also reinforced the importance of teamwork and shared vision in the fashion industry.  He values the exchange of ideas and the opportunity to learn from other talented individuals.

When asked about the  challenges he encounters as a designer, Joshua Wababu highlights that ‘Customers always expect low prices for high-quality products’.  He continues ‘The cost of materials can be prohibitive, making it difficult to balance affordability with quality craftsmanship’.  This is a common challenge for many designers, particularly those working with sustainable or ethically sourced materials.

Joshua Wababu is optimistic about the future of the Ugandan fashion industry.  He believes that this increased local production will not only boost the industry but also create more job opportunities and contribute to the overall development of the Ugandan economy.

He recognizes that the fashion industry is highly competitive, but he also sees this competition as a positive force.  It creates space for new talent to emerge, pushing designers to innovate and elevate their craft.  He believes that this competitive environment will ultimately benefit the industry as a whole, driving creativity and pushing boundaries.

Joshua Wababu has a unique perspective on originality.  He believes that there is nothing truly “new” in fashion; it’s all about reimagining and updating existing styles to fit current trends.  He sees the key to innovation not in creating something entirely new but in taking something old and giving it a fresh, contemporary twist.  This approach allows him to draw inspiration from the past while creating designs that are relevant and appealing to modern audiences.
